Hyperhydrosis (Excessive Sweating)

Excessive sweating or Hyperhidrosis is a condition which affects the eccrine glands. This causes unsightly sweat patches on clothing around the armpit region. Understandably such a condition can have a dramatic impact on one’s self-confidence when in company. This can then lead to an individual restricting their choice of clothing colour, adopting uncomfortable postures and unnatural body movements in an effort to conceal this socially embarrassing condition.

Using carefully controlled injections of botulinum toxin, the amount of sweat produced under any circumstances (temperature changes, episodes of emotional stress and even exercise) will be dramatically reduced.

The Effects
On average it takes one week for the procedure to take effect and generally lasts six to eight months. Although people can have different responses to treatments, in clinical trials there was a significant reduction (87%)in sweat production one week after treatment with 95% of clients finding the treatment to be successful after the first week.

Follow Up
We offer a follow up appointment 2 weeks after the treatment to ensure satisfaction with the result.

Treatment Procedure
Local anaesthetic cream is applied before treatment to make the procedure as comfortable as possible. Clients may have an iodine starch powder test which is applied to the underarm area in order to identify the areas of maximum sweat production.

A removable grid may be drawn on to the skin to assist the practitioner through out the treatment and will be removed after. Very fine needles are then used to inject the product into the under arms.

Factors to help prevent excessive sweating

  • Choose clothing that keeps you cool, natural fibres are the best but they absorb sweat and can result in a damp sensation. Some synthetic fibres are warm but they do help keep sweat away from the body
  • Try to reduce your stress levels
  • Odour can be prevented by keeping good control of personal hygiene.

It is not true that excessive perspiration can cause body odour, the smell which some people think is due to sweating is in fact caused by bacteria on the skin. The bacteria thrive on the warm moist environment caused by sweating. If sweat remains on the skin for a long time it begins to smell, thus attention to regular personal hygiene can help this symptom.
