Botox

Wrinkle treatments – just relax!

Botox (which is in fact a registered trade name of the neurotoxic protein botulinum toxin) has become a household name as an anti-wrinkle treatment thanks to its use by some A-list celebrities. At Temple Aesthetics, Aberdeen, we use a range of muscle-relaxing injections, including Botox, Vistabel, Dysport and Azzalure as facial rejuvenation treatments. Don’t worry about the finer details which differentiate the products, we will recommend the formulation that’s right for you.

After injections of Botox, many people might wonder if you have had a facelift, because of your more youthful appearance. Temple Aesthetics clients report comments that they look refreshed, “in love”, more relaxed.

Injection of Botox is a relatively non-invasive facial rejuvenation treatment which is less harsh than many other cosmetic surgery procedures. Using a very fine needle, small amounts of the product are injected into specific facial muscles causing them to relax. The muscles are no longer able to flex, thus preventing the formation of frown lines on the forehead and crows’ feet around the eyes. Existing lines are much less pronounced as the underlying muscles are more relaxed.

History of muscle-relaxing injections

Muscle relaxing injections (such as Botox) have been successfully used to treat and prevent eye muscle spasms and conditions, such as muscular hyperactivity, for more than 30 years. When reviewing the results of some of these treatments on the face, it was observed that, as a side-effect, any wrinkles that had previously been present, were significantly reduced. Further research was undertaken to explore this phenomenon and now muscle-relaxing injections are widely used across the world in treating facial rejuvenation with spectacular results.

Muscle-relaxing injections using botulinum toxin can also be used to treat much more than just wrinkles.

View Frequently Asked Questions

At Temple Aesthetics, we use a range of muscle-relaxing injections, including Botox®, Vistabel®, Dysport® and Azzalure®. For simplicity, we have used Botox® in these FAQs, but the answers are equally applicable to Vistabel®, Dysport® and Azzalure®.

How long does treatment take?"
The treatment is generally very quick and can even take place during your lunch hour.

Does it hurt?
We use the finest grade needles that are available. We also use a local anaesthetic cream (EMLA). Nevertheless, there is an initial slight pinprick as the needle pierces the skin.

How long before you see the results?
With some facial muscles, the effect is almost instantaneous. With others, the solution gradually takes effect over five to seven days. We schedule a review about 14 days after the treatment so we can appreciate the full effect of the treatment before deciding whether to make any adjustments or top-ups.

How long does the treatment last?
The results can last for up to six months.

What is Botox and how does it work?
Botox® is the registered tradename of botulinum toxin. We use Botox®, Vistabel®, Dysport® and Azzalure® which are all forms of botulinum toxin. Botulinum toxin is a muscle-relaxant. It was discovered while using it to treat eye muscle spasms that, as a side-effect, any wrinkles that had previously been present, were significantly reduced. Further research was undertaken to explore this phenomenon and now muscle-relaxing injections are widely used across the world in treating facial rejuvenation with spectacular results. When small amounts are injected into specific muscles, the muscles are no longer able to flex, thus preventing the formation of frown lines on the forehead and crows’ feet around the eyes. Existing lines are much less pronounced as the underlying muscles are more relaxed.

How is the Botox used?
Using a very fine needle, small amounts of the product are injected into specific facial muscles causing them to relax.

Is Botox safe?
Yes. We only use the highest quality products which are fully licensed and certified. Procedures are administered by a fully-qualified and experienced medical practitioner who is trained in the use of these products.

What is the downtime?
There is usually no downtime.

Are there any side effects?
Unlike other more invasive cosmetic surgery, the side effects are minimal and short lived. You may experience some slight bruising localised to the injection sites. Some clients have mild headaches lasting 1-2 days, which can be controlled by taking appropriate pain relief medication. (There have been reports of a significant reduction in migraine and tension headaches following the use of BTX and there is ongoing research into the use of Botulinum toxin as a treatment for these types of headaches.) In severe, but fortunately rare cases, ptosis has occurred (when the eyebrow lowers), this again is temporary. Being unable to frown can cause you to feel more serene and research has confirmed that treatment with BTX can make you happier - surely a positive side effect!

Can anyone administer Botox?
The regulatory bodies (GMC, NMC, GDC) all state that provided there has been a face-to-face medical assessment by a doctor, treatment can be undertaken by an experienced dentist or nurse, with the doctor having a supervisory role.

Can anyone have Botox?
Certain medical conditions (eg some neurological conditions, pregnancy) and medications mean Botox is not advisable. The face-to-face medical assessment by the doctor during the consultation allows for assessment of the suitability of an individual for Botox treatment.

Where is Botox used?
Predominantly Botox treatments are used on the face to reduce lines and wrinkles, such as forehead lines, glabellar (frown) lines, crow's feet (side of the eyes), infra-orbital lines (below the eyes), peri-oral lip lines (lipstick bleed lines), chin puckering and nasal flaring. It is also used on the neck, jaw and chin and is very effective in treating hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).
